Be safe, employ a professional

Traditionally, the DIY season starts at Easter and gathers pace throughout the summer, Bank holidays being favourite for homeowners to tackle jobs. However, new figures from the Department of Trade and Industry show that around 70 people are killed and 250,000 people injured every year in DIY-related accidents.

A lot of jobs are made to look simple on the television, but can go drastically wrong in the hands of inexperienced people. Often Building and Water Regulations are ignored, which can also have a detrimental affect on people’s safety and health.

Danny Davis, technical officer for the Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (IPHE) said: “Besides risking injuries, a lot of DIY enthusiasts also risk spending additional money employing someone to sort out the mess they have made. My advice is not to take chances when dealing with the plumbing system in your home, always use a professional.”

Consumers can visit www.iphe.org.uk to find an IPHE Registered Plumber in their area or they can ring the Institute on 01708 472791 in office hours, Monday to Friday.
