Don't be left in the cold

The British summer is renown for being unreliable, sometimes it's scorching hot, sometimes it seems like it's freezing cold. For those homeowners who do not get their central heating systems serviced once a year, this theme can continue in their homes for the winter ahead.

The Institute of Plumbing (IoP) is advising all homeowners to get their central heating and plumbing systems serviced yearly, ideally before the autumn, so that any problems can be rectified before the cold weather sets in. Dale Courtman, Technical Director for the Institute commented, "It might seem odd to start thinking about your central heating system in the middle of the summer, but without regular maintenance plumbing and heating systems can develop problems which (in the case of a heating system) may only manifest when the heating is turned back on – if there is a problem you could be left without heat and hot water when you most need it."

Most people tend to forget about their heating systems when they are turned off over the summer and plumbing systems only seem to be noticed when there is a problem like a burst pipe or leaky tap. Think of the value of your house compared to your car, why get your car serviced at least once a year and not your home? There are safety issues such as Carbon Monoxide poisoning to also take into account. A yearly service of your central heating and plumbing system can give you peace of mind when it comes to the most precious things you have - your life, your family and your home.

The Institute of Plumbing offers general advice to consumers via its website www.plumbers.org.uk, you can also find a Registered Plumber online via its search facility.
