IPHE President Announces Royal Charter
5th March 2008
Chartered status has been awarded to the Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering, the professional body for the plumbing and heating industry in the UK. From summer 2008 the IPHE will become the 'Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering'.
The award of a Charter by the Privy Council is affirmation of the contribution the Institute makes to the safety and health of the public and the environment. It also recognizes the role the organisation plays in the plumbing and heating industry, providing leadership, developing policy, raising standards through training and education, and making members accountable through the Code of Conduct.
Speaking at the IPHE Annual President's Dinner at the Café Royal in London, on 5th March, the current president of the Institute, Grant Nicoll said: "We are delighted to be awarded this Charter. Congratulations to our chairman Reg James, chief executive Blane Judd and all of the head office team who have worked tirelessly for the last two years to secure this recognition for the contribution our Institute makes to the safety and health of the public and the environment."
He continued: "The granting of the charter also underlines the professionalism of our membership and in time the initials CIPHE will be recognised as THE sign of professionally qualified and hence competent plumbing and heating engineers."
For Mr Nicoll his year of presidency also marks 50 years in the plumbing and heating industry. A self-employed plumber from Dundee in Scotland, he is a professional standards inspector for the IPHE and was awarded Master Plumber status in 2005.
The president also announced a nationwide campaign amongst the 12,000 members of the IPHE to promote recognition of the Chartered Institute. Window stickers proclaiming Proud to be CIPHE have been mailed out to all members with a letter from chief executive Blane Judd announcing the granting of the Charter. In the letter Mr Judd said: "Together we will raise awareness of the work that the Institute and its members do to protect the safety and health of the public and the environment. We're very proud to be CIPHE - and we know you will be too."

IPHE director to join 'Low Heat' organisation
Dale Courtman, Technical Director of The Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering, has been appointed as a business development manager with PERA based in Melton Mowbray.
The move, set to take place in April, will see Dale securing project partners to develop technical innovations similar to the 'Low Heat' project, which was led by the IPHE. PERA is an international network of technology development and industry support centres that help firms to develop innovative new products, improve business performance and enhance management and leadership skills.
"We have gained an immense amount from working with PERA on the Low Heat project. We hope that with Dale as part of their team we will be able to explore new opportunities to partner PERA in further projects, which advance the technology of plumbing and heating engineering," said Blane Judd, chief executive of the IPHE. "Dale has been a part of the IPHE team for the last nine years and has assisted the Institute in becoming the technical heart of the profession, we wish him well in this new venture".
"I've enjoyed my time at the IPHE immensely," said Dale Courtman, who lives in Grantham. "The experience I've gained here has enabled me to take on this new and exciting role. I look forward to joining PERA but also supporting the Institute in future innovation projects."
