October 2007

Don't make matters worse!

With the cold weather setting in, it’s likely that problems will develop with some plumbing and central heating systems, especially if they haven’t been serviced on a regular basis.

The Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (IPHE), the professional body for the industry, is urging the public to make sure they choose a professional to resolve the problem; otherwise it could cause further anguish and expense.

Blane Judd, chief executive, gives the following advice: “Our members are bound by a Code of Professional Standards, so you know that when you use an IPHE member you are using someone who has qualifications and more importantly, experience.

“Last year, IPHE members had over 15 million contact hours with clients, approximately 40 complaints were received and resolved with only six people being removed from membership. This is a fantastic record, which certainly gives the public confidence in using our members.”

To find a member in your local area, please visit the Institute’s website www.iphe.org.uk and click on the Find a Plumber link. Alternatively ring 01708 472791

Career development

Are you thinking of going self-employed, or need help with creating a professional CV? If the answer is yes, why not come to the free IPHE one-day conference at the Union Jack Club, London on 28th November.

Organised by the IPHE’s Women in Plumbing Group (WPG), the theme for this year is ‘Getting In and Getting On’. This conference will give advice and information on career progression in the plumbing and heating industry.

The event is being jointly sponsored by Mira Showers and PTS. Grundfos Pumps Limited will also be supporting the conference. Employers thinking of taking on a trainee will also find this event beneficial.

Besides speakers from City and Guilds, British Gas and JTL, delegates will get the chance to take part in workshops covering CVs, tax and VAT and progression to NVQ Level 3. A buffet lunch and refreshments are included.

Booking forms can be downloaded from www.iphe.org.uk/wip.html or you can request one from Carol Cannavan on 01708 463114 or email carolc@iphe.org.uk.
