Requirements and Guidance Notes for Members
This new format for Institute members is administered by the Technical Services Board, based on that developed by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), with their full co-operation. The target figures for hours and points are less onerous than those required by the RIBA for its members because they take into account the different working environment of those concerned. However, the parallel scheme for Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering Industrial Associates acting as PD Providers is exactly the same as that operated by the RIBA.
We hope that this new approach will help you to plan your career and assist with the common sense procedure of keeping up-to-date. Following the discipline of PD is an important aspect of the Institute's Code of Professional Standards and it brings great credit to all those who enter into such a commitment in order to remain competent.
The IPHE Professional Development Plan
The IPHE Professional Development Plan (PDP) will help you achieve your work-related development aims in a systematic way. Refer to it throughout the year to see if you’re meeting your plans and to update them as appropriate.
• Your PDP may reflect your individual professional development needs as a member of the plumbing profession and the business needs of your organisation. Here are some areas you may wish to pursue to meet your professional development needs:
- Company awareness and/or networking with others
- New technologies
- The practicalities of running your business
- Practical skills
- The legal responsibilities of plumbers
- Changes in the construction industry and the plumbing sector
- Societys needs
Assessing your development aims
In completing your PDP, you might also wish to consider:
- Career development needs
- Job description, requirements and workload
- Your long-term goals
- Experience since qualification
- Degree of specialisation
- How much time you can devote to individual activities
- Level of achievement you are aiming for
- The most convenient and interesting learning formats for you
Download the IPHE Professional Development Record Sheet (PDF: 50Kb / 3 pages) where you can log your PD activity.
Remember:
Items on your PD Record Sheet will not necessarily all relate to the Development Aims and Planned Activities you have included on your PDP. The PDP is intended to help you structure your PD but is not a rigid prescription of what you must do.
